May is Older Americans Month, so Peoples Bank & Trust is bringing you vital information about common scams aimed at seniors. Unfortunately, senior citizens are the target of many scams because attackers take advantage of their age. Today we are discussing four common scams aimed at seniors.
Great grandchildren scam– Attackers often call senior citizens and claim that they are grandchildren or great grandchildren and demand money from the senior. Scammers can easily find information about a senior’s grandchild and pretend to be them over the phone. Eventually, they will ask for money.
Prescription drug scams– Because of the rising cost of some prescription medications, you may feel tempted to search online for cheaper versions of drugs. Be cautious when searching online because it is likely that the prescription drugs are counterfeit and a scammer is trying to make money off of sending it to you. Also be aware of any offers for anti-aging supplements you see online.
Be aware of phony financial advisors– When looking for a financial advisor, be sure they have the proper credentials and are well-qualified to handle your money. It is best to meet with a financial advisor in person because phony advisors are more likely to only want to talk on the phone. Always check around to be sure your financial advisor has the proper credentials.
Health care scams– Seniors are more likely to be the target of health care scams. A scammer might call and claim that they have talked to your son or daughter and just need a little bit more information from you. In many cases, they file claims with Medicare on your behalf and pocket the money.
We need to help protect the seniors in our communities, and the only way is to spread awareness. Be sure to share these scams with your aging parents or other older family members and friends. Together, we can help protect our seniors and help them live a life free of fraud.
